Project Overview
Approached by founder Joshua Zad, this journey started with one simple question: “Could I get you a cup of coffee?” After a discussion was had and a contract drawn, we were hired as the general contractor for Alfred Coffee’s Marina del Rey location. Our second build with Alfred, this location was the first establishment in a new plaza development on the marina.
The Client’s Vision
What made working with Alfred a unique experience was their design team’s prioritization of individuality. Though Alfred has an easily recognizable brand identity, each location is uniquely stylized to the area it serves. Marina del Rey was no different. Our brief was simple: build a high end cafe with a nautical theme rooted in the marina’s rich history.
The MODAA Approach
- Inner Workings: To start, it was integral that we set the stage for the build to flourish. From MEP’s to dry wall to finishes, we ensured the entire building’s interior was pristine and ready for final stylistic touches.
- Nautical Element: To tie in the nautical theme into the build, we installed a barrel ceiling. Emblematic of wood slatting on a boat and/or barrel you may see on a ship, the stylistic choice is perfectly tied into the build as a whole.
- Vendor Coordination: While we primarily hired our own vetted and approved subcontractors, we also coordinated with the owner’s vendors. Though unexpected, working with vendors who were closely tied to the owner created a trust based work environment.
The Experience
Smooth and highly collaborative, this project is yet another treasured memory. Not only were we tasked with the vision of a highly regarded brand, but were able to make informed decisions built upon the trust and collaboration of our partners.
A Reminder Of Small Beginnings
This project is proof that asking one simple question can be the start of something bigger than the sum of its parts. We are happy to say that with this build, we have created a long standing relationship with Alfred and are honored to have built for a renowned and quintessentially LA brand.
