Custom Luxury – Lautner House

Project Overview

A landmark of mid-century design, the Lautner House is one of legendary architect John Lautner’s “favorite five” commissions, completed in 1961. Recognized as both a Los Angeles cultural monument and a California State monument, the home is often viewed as a West Coast homage to Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater.

The Client’s Vision

When architect Clive Wilkinson approached MODAA in 2021, the goal was clear: restore and modernize a masterpiece without compromising its architectural soul. The residence needed thoughtful updates that honored Lautner’s original vision while allowing it to live and function as a contemporary home.

The MODAA Approach

MODAA was entrusted with designing a budget, timeline, and execution plan to guide this sensitive renovation.

  • Craftsmanship & Restoration: We resurfaced the iconic pool overlooking Los Angeles, refreshed lighting and finishes, and completed intricate stonework and tile installations.
  • Modern Infrastructure: Plumbing and behind-the-wall systems were upgraded to meet today’s standards while staying invisible to the design’s integrity.
  • Respect for Legacy: Certain original elements, like the fireplace, were deliberately left untouched, while other materials and stylistic choices echoed Lautner’s hand, creating continuity between past and present.

The Experience

Throughout the project, MODAA worked collaboratively with Wilkinson’s team, balancing architectural preservation with modern enhancements. Every decision was guided by respect for Lautner’s artistry and the homeowners’ trust in MODAA’s ability to manage details at the highest level of luxury construction.

The Legacy

The renovation was completed with precision and care, bringing new life to a cultural icon. The Lautner House went on to be purchased by Amanda Hearst and director Joaqim Rønning, and now belongs to Nicolas Ghesquière, Creative Director at Louis Vuitton, which is a fitting custodian for a property that represents both heritage and modern luxury.
